I switched to Linux 30 days ago... How did it go?
Grab yourself a Pint Glass at craftcomputing.store
I've ran Linux on my laptop for well over a year, and have showed Linux on Gaming PCs too many times to count... but what about installing Linux on my workstation? I spent the last 30 days with ZorinOS 17, and did 100% of my Video Editing, 3D Modeling, Live Streaming and day to day business operations from it. How did it go? What challenges did I face, and would I recommend it for you?
But first... What am I drinking???

    In the past i have used different desktop environments to suit my workflow and found that Cinnamon was a happy in between to the simplicity and stability of Gnome but offers great customize ability similar to KDE, the graphical issues mentioned in this video i have not experienced using Linux Mint with the Cinnamon environment. Should try it!

    I switched to Linux a long time ago, but I don't remember expecting everything to work perfectly within 30 days. It's a different operating system, and all you're doing is complaining that it doesn't work like windows. Linux is not Windows. And being able to manipulate windows is actually one of Linux's strengths. You just have to learn how to use it on whatever distro you're using. Furthermore, you can't blame Linux for supporting your software if you're using proprietary software. Davinci Resolve has to support their product, not the other way around. But, if all you're going to do is complain about your time spent, I don't think you're going find much sympathy in the Linux community or Forums. We all got our own time to worry about, too. Normally, I would encourage people to switch, but if all you're going to do is make complaint videos, I don't think I want to hear it. 😄

    What I wish creators realized that theirs is very much a niche use case. As it stands, every "My Linux Expecrience" or "Why I can't use Linux" video basically boils down to "I need Adobe for work". Most everyone else basically needs the OS to run a browser and get out of the way otherwise. And please, stop cobbling together your system. Downloading software from websites and installing manually will bite you eventually. Nvidia drivers are a prime example for that. You should start from a distro that supports your use case. It sounds like you might be a lot happier on KDE.

    You overstated the linux hardware driver problem. It's almost all there, you'd have to be using something odd to not have a driver. Like an industrial printer, for instance. All of the things 99.9% of people are gonna use, have no problems with drivers and getting linux to work with their hardware. That's why you didn't have any trouble.

  • @mrazurix6258
    @mrazurix6258 13 часов назад

    The windowing problem you encountered is specific to zorin and maybe gnome in general but the window manager or compositor have different features between desktop environments and can be modified by extension like you did with popos tiling features. There are some extensions to make gnome have features like fancy zones. Après une petite recherche "tiling shell" a l'air d'être l'extension Désirée.

  • @mrazurix6258
    @mrazurix6258 13 часов назад

    For resolve it should be able to resize no problem so it is a problem specific for your situation but it should be noted that it does work and that was probably related to the window manager and maybe because zorin relies on some old package.

    I agree to say that Photoshop and Gimp do not compare, but for most users Gimp will do the job. You are an exception and a poweruser. Linux distro's are mostly not for powerusers, but Mac and Windows do, mainly because you have to pay a lot of $ for the needed software. Keep in mind that almost all Linux applications are free. In this philosophy i can stay that i use Linux (Debian derivatives) on a daily base for more than 17 years now. No Windows or Mac in sight 😀

Linux has been getting better, and for those of us that have daily driven the operating system for years it's refreshing to see someone give an unbiased take on the current state of things. Maybe you can try again in a few more years?

    I am with you on the major comments of making the Linux community upset. I as a long time PC user and enthusiast. have seen software companies come and go. I never minded paying for my software. Ya sometimes fell the price is to high and shopped around looking for cheaper and better software. But I do not mind paying for them. That seems to be taken as an insult to the Linux community. I do not feel that I should apologize for that. However, I feel they should listen. This is why Linux software never gets any better.

    Ok but how is the Linux or Mac community going to help you out with software support? It's like asking why doesn't my hatchback have the same boot space as my truck. Here's my software suggestion - just keep using Windows if you expect Windows features 1 to 1 on every system

    I daily drive Linux for my general usage laptop. This is the laptop I use for general web browsing, bill paying, financial management....typical home management items That said, I also use it to manage my homelab's vmware server cluster. I did have to rely on Wine to install my IPMI utility but outside of that, there's a native VMWare client for remotely viewing my VMs console sessions so that's sweet. I also use it for some light gaming relying heavily on Proton's compatibility layer via Steam and also using the Heroic Launcher to interface with the Epic Games and play those Windows native titles also via the proton compat layer. But that's only for the rare occasions when I don't feel like sitting in the office on my Windows powered gaming rig. Big shoutout to Valve and the Proton team for this huge benefit to the Linux gaming community! Oh and to the SteamDeck for making Linux gaming mainstream even though not all of the customers realize they're gaming on Linux

    I've laughed at "Just run Gimp! It's basically the same thing" LOL For us Linux users who occasionally perform the simple one-off, small scale, very-minor, image manipulations, Gimp is perfectly fine. For people who are industry pros that rely on very specific Photoshop-only tools or other applications from the Adobe CC suite, it's a devastating downgrade.

    Both LInux and Windows have their positives and negatives, having a multioperating system setup with both is the best option in my opinion. Linux does provide a lot more freedom yet at the cost of dealing with all the detailed nuts and bolts of running things efficiently which can be very time consuming, frustrating and sometimes lead to a dead end where you simply have to give up on it and stop wasting time. If your primary goal is to run specific programs and be productive doing such, Windows will often save you a lot of time configuring things. Windows does run most open source software available in Linux and sometimes just as good without getting into complex drive installation issues. One good example is the program Blender. Blender has a feature using the rendering option Cycles that requires specific installation of drive components that makes use of GPUs (such as; HIP, CUDA-depending on the type of graphic card being used). To get this feature in Linux working properly is a lot of extra complicated installation procedures and time consuming,. To make matters more time consuming Linux updates could set you back to square one repeating the process over again. Oddly enough Blender was originally designed as open source software to run on Linux yet Windows provides a lot easier use of the full features. I would assume that if Linux did not have so many different flavors and forks there would be better support from graphic cards manufacturers such as Nvidia and AMD-Radeon. Since every different Linux OS has some minor differences providing support for hundreds of different operating systems would cost a fortune in labor and development costs. So the trade off is with LInux you get a lot more choice and freedom, having different desktop environments available for your operating system is a plus, yet at the cost of less support for hardware due to the pressure from shareholders of porprietary profit making businesses that only support the operating systems that are most popular in use.

    The problem is that Linux is just a kernel. We need to think of the Linux kernel as a car chassis that is used to build a car. The same car chassis used by Volkswagen and Audi can result in two very different cars that behave differently and give you a different experience. It's the same with Linux. Unfortunately, you've experienced a lot of Gnome issues that you won't experience if you go for example with Linux Mint or with a KDE desktop environment distro. This is why the Linux experience can be VASTLY different.

    I recommend checking out Krita for photo editing software Photoshop and other Adobe products might be good but with the recent changes to the TOS I really think no one should continue using them. GIMP, on the other hand, is awful with its UI/UX like I don't think it is actually possible to professionally use that application. As for literally all your problems with window management and a lack of maximize,minimize and close buttons on davinci resolve that is because of gnome what Zorin uses by default. I recommend trying out KDE and if you can really invest the time, configure and learnk a tiling window manager as those are the best when it comes to controlling your workflow as you want it and not how a company thinks it should be. As for nvidea and AAC, yea not much can be done. Nvidea is improving, not because of Nvidea themselves though. Other issues related to Discord and Zoom are due to them being flatpaks and being sandboxed as you mentioned, as Zorin OS is Ubuntu based both of those have native deb versions available so I'd recommend try those.

    Suggesting gimp to someone looking to make photoshop work is a dick move. But suggesting gimp to someone looking for an alternative to photoshop is very reasonable, in my opinion. You'd have to specify the use cases that gimp doesn't cover, which I'd actually be curious to know. I've been practicing with gimp for the past few weeks and there's only one thing that I miss: non-destructive editing. Gimp's "paths" feature kind of enables it, but it's got a long way to go. I looked up how photoshop does on that regard but didn't see any signs that it's better. Also, I hate adobe and not having any software made by them right now is a big plus.
